If any of these feelings are familiar you may not realize the impact of either stress or anxiety in your life.
When you are feeling stressed or anxious, it is an indication that you have moved beyond the emotional threshold that your inner self says you can cope with. Sometimes this may be hard to believe because usually you are a very capable person, but stress, like all feelings is a signal from your inner self that you need some form of help. Your emotional signal will indicate what form of help you need. For instance you may need actual assistance, such as help with childcare, a nanny, a PA (don’t we all!) or a housekeeper. You may need some guidance in your job through learning a new skill to help you with a difficult project. You can also think of your stress in another way – that your inner self is literally being stressed to grow. In this case think about what emotional skills you are being encouraged to learn. You might be being pushed to learn how to speak up for yourself or set some boundaries around what you do for others. Sometimes it is the hardest thing to say the word ‘no’, but we all need to learn how to say that word effectively in order to manage our lives in more balanced way.
If you suffer from anxiety, it is likely you have a highly analytical mind and you tend to be good at identifying problem areas. This is a great gift when you are a project manager but using this approach to life means that you can become fearful of everyday events. Learning to deal with anxiety is a step by step process. This is no different than learning any other skill. When faced with new avenues or opportunities, learning how to put them into the context of your whole life rather than focusing on the minutiae of each step you take will help you to reduce some of your fears. When you learn how to stop projecting every fear you have into every step before you, you will find the emotional freedom you seek.
